Ink and Bone, by Rachel Caine

About three chapters in, and really liking it. I'm conflicted about the main character though, because while the supporting cast are diverse, this feels like a white boy wins the race/quest/whatever story (which suggests that I should go back and look at the descriptions of the protagonist, and see if I've whitewashed him).
