Half a King (Joe Abercrombie) -- mildly disabled younger son accidentally becomes king on the death of his father and older brother, is betrayed, has to survive. The disability is a malformation of the hand; it is relevant to the story, but this is not inspiration porn. Well written, good world building, interesting (and varied) characters, and yet I was a bit bored. Highly recommended for those who like quest/high fantasy, or those who want a quiet afternoon.

Thanks for this; have downloaded a sample since it sounds like good dropping-off-to-sleep reading.

Yes, I think it would work for dropping-off-to-sleep reading, the story flows logically, and was easy to follow in increments (plus, written in set pieces, as so much high fantasy is).
