It's...hard going, because of the emotional content, which is sort of subsumed under the actual events he's retelling. All of the immigrants described suffered greatly, mostly because of displacement or active harm caused by WWII. And one suffered because he was gay at time when it was believed gayness could be cured by things like electroshock therapy. But the narrative is elegant and moving and worth reading, despite all the tragedy.
