I don't think I’ve read anything by Margery Allingham, but according to Wikipedia, Campion started off as a parody of Peter Wimsey — I really like the Wimsey books, so do you think I’d like the Campion books too? And if so, what would you recommend to start off with? I’m more into novels than short stories at the moment, if that helps.
I find the very early ones a bit Biggles and Bulldog Drummond, but amusing nonetheless. The first one I read (decades ago, must re-read) was Tiger in the Smoke. Usually I prefer to start at the beginning of a series, but in the case of Campion there are several short stories for tasters. How about the collection "Mr Campion and Others"?
Coincidentally, I’m in the middle of watching the Edward Petherbridge/Harriet Walter TV adaptation of Gaudy Night at the moment. It’s a bit disappointing — they’ve cut out lots of the story. I’m possibly only still watching it because it was filmed at my old college.
