On closer reading of the instructions for setup of home Internet—this time with all the boxes actually open, and with attention paid to what all the labels said—the setup was actually less confusing than I thought. My home Internet works now!

Back to reading the things I scribbled (or am still scribbling, because I'm still not done packing!) on the sides of boxes.
